"APILAMIENTO DE LUCES" / "LIGHT STACKING"

En el estadio evolutivo en que me encuentro, como bien sabéis los que me conocéis de cerca, disfruto más haciendo las fotos en el campo que procesándolas ante el ordenador. Sin embargo, lo cierto es que a diario tengo más tiempo de lo segundo que de lo primero, y no voy a negar que también me encanta. También sabéis que no uso mucho Photoshop, tan solo para montar panorámicas, apilamiento de enfoque, carteles, y poco más. Pero en estos días he descubierto/inventado/conocido una nueva técnica, de la que no había leído nada, así que quiero compartirla con vosotros y os invito a probarla y compartir vuestros resultados. La vamos a llamar "APILAMIENTO DE LUCES", y nace de mis intentos (de los que ya habíamos hablado) de jugar con las luces a las horas del crepúsculo, cuando queda aún algo de luz en el cielo. El otro día, en uno de mis bosques favoritos, en Talayuela, Cáceres, España, traté de seguir jugando con la iluminación posterior de los árboles. Con algunos problemas, por cierto, porque los árboles son estrechos y la luz "se me salía por los lados". Probé varias iluminaciones, frontal, lateral, contraluz, y conseguí algunas imágenes que me parecen, al menos, interesantes. Pero en alguna ocasión, obtenía una foto "casi perfecta",  que no lograba serlo porque se me había olvidado iluminar una zona de la imagen, y pensé: "será posible hacer otra con la iluminación que le falta a ésta, y después "apilarlas""? Así que eso hice, y veamos cómo resultó el experimento:

In my current evolutive moment, as many of you know well about me, I like a lot better when I'm out in the field than in front of the computer, although I admit I love this part, too. Luckily, by the way, because I have more time for the latter than I have for the former... Well, you know I don't use Photoshop much, except for panos, some focus stacking, posters, and little more... But in these day I have discovered/invented/come up with a new digital technique, I will call it "LIGHT STACKING", that I hadn't read about, so let me share it. It comes from my first light painting attempts I have shared before in this blog. And it was in one of my favorite places, the pine forest of Talayuela, Cáceres, Spain, that I went to keep on trying. I tried several different lighting setups, especially front, side and back lighting, with some interesting results. Only some times, when the image was "almost perfect", but for the fact I had forgotten to light some parts of the frame, and I thought: "So, why not illuminate that part in another shot, and then try some kind of "stacking the images together" in Photoshop"?. Okay, so let's see how thing came out: 

Me gustó mucho el resultado, pero todavía se me ocurrió otra idea sobre la marcha: "¿Y por qué no tratar de unir imágenes que han quedado bien, pero tienen iluminaciones diferentes?" Bueno, pues eso hice, y así quedó otra de las fotos. En mi opinión, cada golpecito de luz ayuda a completar la imagen final, que es mucho más intensa que las otras, a ver a vosotros qué os parece...

Bueno, vamos al tema: ¿Cómo lo has hecho? Pues hay dos fases: 

• Primero, a nivel de técnica en el campo, los principios fueron una improvisación, aunque ahora ya trabajaré pensando en ella. Lo cierto es que te permite hacer exposiciones más cortas, sabiendo que vamos a conseguir la toma por partes, incluso que podemos corregir los errores con tomas posteriores.
• Y la segunda fase, el postproceso, es tan fácil que creo que lo comprenderéis sin necesidad de un videotutorial de esos que odio porque nunca tengo paciencia de ver completos: sólo se trata de abrir todas las imágenes como capas, en el mismo archivo, y ajustar el "modo de fusión" de cada capa en "color más claro". Esto hace que el programa muestre, en cada pixel, el más claro (para nosotros, el mejor iluminado) de todos los que están apilados. Y el resultado final es éste.

Well, I loved the results quite a lot, but then I still came up with another idea: "What if I stack nice images with different lightings, and see what comes out?" Alright, this is it...

And yes, here comes what you are waiting for, finally: here's the whole process, in two steps: 

• Step one, on the field, (although the beginning was purely casual), the idea is to keep adding to the final shot, lighting different parts of the frame, or adding different sources of light. We can even correct mistakes or sections not properly illuminated. And...
• Step two, post processing: it's so easy that we won't really need one of those video tutorials whose end I never reach, ;-) It's as simple as opening all shots as layers of the same file in Photoshop, then adjust blending mode to "lighter color" in all layers. This shows up the lighter pixel present in any layer, thus showing up every illumination. Simple, isn't it?

Vacaciones en Bretaña.

La primera noche de nuestras vacaciones familiares la pasamos en Chartres. A la mañana siguiente, paseábamos por la ciudad camino de su hermosa catedral, cuando este detalle me llamó la atención con muchísima fuerza. Me quedé atrás y exploré el sujeto tanto como pude, cambiando los ángulos, los puntos de vista, las lentes, la distancia al sujeto... Hice más de 25 fotos distintas, y me quedé satisfecho, y me marché. Un par de horas después, al pasar por el mismo sitio, el hidrante estaba en sombra, y sólo paré un momento, y sólo hice ésta. Pero al final resultó ser mi favorita. Creo que contiene todo el ambiente de provincias francés, tranquilo, limpio y ordenado, y donde las flores, incluso las silvestres, siempre están presentes como decoración. Abrí el diafragma tanto como pude, sabiendo que el fondo, aun desenfocado, no perdería nada de su encanto.
En el proceso posterior en Lightroom utilicé la herramienta "filtro degradado" para aplicar un desenfoque máximo a la parte izquierda de la imagen, lo cual sacrificaba la nitidez de las flores del primer plano, pero me concedía algo así como un diafragma más de desenfoque.


Vacations in Brittany, France.

We spent the first night of our family summer trip in Chartres. The morning after, as we were walking towards the magnificent cathedral, this detail called my attention so strongly, so I stopped a moment, and explored the subject as much as I could come up with, changing angles, points of view, lenses, distances... I took more than 25 different images, and was satisfied, and left. A couple hours later, as we passed through the place, the hydrant was in shade, and I came up with this single shot, that finally turned out to be my favorite one. I think it holds the atmosphere all around in France, quiet, clean and tidy, and where flowers, even wild flowers, are always present. I opened up my lens as much as I could, in the hope that the big aperture would not steal any information from the background.
And plus, I used the graduated filter tool in Lightroom to add a -100 blur to the left side of the image, thus sacrificing some sharpness in the foreground flowers, but gaining something like a full stop of bokeh.

Bosque otoñal. Segovia, España.

Fue una desilusión descubrir un fantástico bosque de rivera en los alrededores de Segovia y comprobar que las hojas habían caído de los árboles hacía una o dos semanas. Hasta que, adentrándome en el bosque, comprendí que ahora toda la emoción del otoño estaba en el suelo, y fue un par de sesiones que no tenían fin, porque la luz suave del cielo nublado y el interior del bosque permiten disparar a cualquier hora del día. Enseguida me interesaron el río y la alfombra de otoño, así que busqué una composición que los incluyera a ambos. Me gustó esta foto porque, gracias a una composición simétrica, transmite bastante bien la tranquilidad del lugar y del momento. Utilicé la velocidad más lenta que pude, para lograr el efecto seda en el agua del arroyo, y de regalo me llevé la profundidad de campo máxima de una apertura tan cerrada.
En el proceso posterior decidí subexponer la decisión inicial de la cámara, para dar más ambiente y saturación a la escena, y por supuesto aumenté la saturación y enfoque de las hojas.

Fall forest. Segovia, Spain.

It was a big disappointment when I discovered this fantastic deciduous forest near Segovia, only to find out the last leaves had just fallen down a week ago. Only until I entered the forest and understood that now, all the excitement was on the ground, and it was a pair of neverending sessions, since the soft light of the overcast day and the forest allowed for all day shooting. I was immediately interested by the river and the autumnal blanket, and tried to include both in a composition. I finally loved this one, because that symmetry helps transmit the feeling of calm and peace of the place and the moment. I set the lowest possible speed to give the water a silky effect, and as a bonus, I gained the depth of view that only such a closed aperture can yield.

I decided to underexpose a bit in postprocessing, thus improving the general athmosphere and saturation, and of course improved as much as I could saturation and sharpnes in the leaves area.

Let me invite you to read the story behind this photograph, undoubtedly one of the most exciting I've shot in 2014:

Otoño en el Parque Nacional de Monfragüe. Cáceres, España.

No me lo podía creer. Sólo estaba buscando una silueta interesante de monte mediterraneo, que me ayudase a suavizar la desilusión de ver que la luna estaba cayendo y no había logrado ninguna toma interesante. Aparqué en un mirador del parque, frente a la ladera donde la luna ya se ponía a toda velocidad, y ajusté mis parámetros para garantizar una exposición correcta de la luna. Y cuando apunté mi teleobjetivo, creí que el corazón se me saldría del pecho al ver la silueta de las ciervas pastando, tranquilamente, en el lugar exacto para una foto perfecta. Las primeras fotos salieron movidas, porque esperaba hacer una toma de varios segundos con el trípode, pero afortunadamente, los animales estaban tranquilos y me dieron la oportunidad de modificar los parámetros. Luego, inlcuso, llegaría el macho a posar en el mismo hueco, aunque ninguna toma me gusta tanto como ésta. Recogí y me fui corriendo a descargar mi tarjeta.
La imagen es tan simple, tan sólo tres colores planos, que sólo tuve que aumentar ligeramente la saturación, y subir los negros para eliminar todo posible detalle de las siluetas.

Fall in Monfragüe National Park. Cáceres, Spain.

I could not believe it. I simply was looking for a spot from where I could silhouette the mediterranean forest against the quickly setting moon, before go home without any interesting shot that day. I parked my car in the parking lot and set up my tripod and camera, facing the slope where the moon almost touched the treetops. I adjusted my parameters to correctly expose for the moon, but when i looked through the lens, only then I could see the deers, calmly grazing in the exact right place for the perfect shot. The first photos came out blurred, since I had planned for a several seconds exposition, but fortunately, nothing disturbed the animals and they gave me a few more minutes. Later came (and posed) the male, but this one is my favorite. It was time to pack my gear and rush home to put card to computer.
The image is so simple, with only three flat colors in it, that all I had to do in postprocessing was increase saturation and lower the blacks to completely remove any detail from the silhouettes.

Cumbre del Curavacas. Palencia, España.

La noche que pasé vivaqueando en la cumbre del Curavacas fue sin duda la más emocionante del año desde el punto de vista fotográfico, y también vital. Subí equipado para no pasar el mismo frío que un par de noches antes en otra montaña cercana, pero el tiempo estuvo muy estable toda la noche, permitiéndome tomar grandes imágenes del atardecer y el amanecer. Llegué a la cima con tiempo suficiente de descubrir el impresionante mar de nubes sobre los valles cantábricos al norte de la Montaña Palentina. La cruz con las banderas de oración fue un espectacular primer plano cargado de simbolismos que hacían a la imagen más montañera. Coloqué la cámara en el trípode para una velocidad lenta, y compuse tratando de incluir muchos elementos en la imagen: la cruz, el buzón y la campana de la cumbreen primer plano, la mole del Espigüete a la izquierda, el mar de nubes a la derecha, la puesta de sol... El color de la luz hizo el momento perfecto.
En el proceso posterior reduje el contraste del contraluz mediante los deslizadores de altas luces y sombras, y naturalmente enriquecí la saturación.


Summit of mount Curavacas. Palencia, Spain.

The night I spent bivouacking on top of mount Curavacas was definitely the nmost exciting of the year, from a photographic, and also vital, point of view. I went up equipped against the cold I had had a couple nights before in a neighboring mountain, but the wheather was very stable all night long, and I had great opportunuties of sunset and sunrise shots. I summited with plenty of time to admire the awesome landscape and the clouds covering the northern side of the sierra. The cross with the praying flags around gave me the perfect foreground, full of mountaineering symbolism. I set the camera on the tripod, and adjusted for a long exposure, and I tried to include all the elements in the image: The cross, the mailbox, the bell, the bulk of mount Espigüete to the left, the cloud cover to the right, the sunset... The color of the light made for the perfect moment.
In posprocessing, I reduced the general contrast with the highlights and shadows sliders, and of course I increased saturation.

Tengo mucho que agradeceros a todos en las últimas semanas. Habéis disparado las visitas al blog en la entrada sobre la Montaña Palentina, y me estáis dando alas para continuar fuerte. Ahora mismo tengo centenares de proyectos, así que aquí va uno nuevo: de vez en cuando, os propondré alguna de mis fotos favoritas, comentada y procesada. Espero que os guste la idea, y como siempre espero comentarios. ¡Ah!, y las críticas también valen (ya sé que soy muuuuuy bueno, pero algún defectivo se me podrá sacar, ¿no? ;-)

I'm so grateful to all of you over the last weeks. My post on the mountains of Palencia ranks 3rd in visits to the blog right now, and many of you speak and read in English, so this is giving me wings to keep on working for you. I have so many projects right now, and so little time... So let's go with one of them: every little while, I'll be posting one of my favorite photos, along with a description and processing tips. I hope you like the idea, and look forward to your comments. Criticisms are welcome too (I know I'm veeeeeery good, but if you try really hard, you can find something wrong, ;-)

III Raid Sierra de Segura. Jaén.

Estaba cubriendo una carrera de aventura y había estado todo el día lloviendo, pero tenía suficientes imágenes y decidí que podía ser un poco creativo. Busqué una bajada rápida y fácil para que los ciclistas bajasen deprisa, y procuré encontrar un fondo lo más homogéneo posible para que ningún elemento llamase demasiado la atención. Ajusté una velocidad lenta y esperé a que pasara algún equipo. Cuando llegan, todo ocurre en un par de segundos, de modo que hay un gran componente de suerte en la composición. Esta foto me pareció diferente porque a pesar del movimiento, refleja muy bien la concentración del ciclista y deja 2mucho espacio" para interpretar que la carrera será muy larga.
En el procesado posterior, tan solo reduje las altas luces para minimizar un poco el cielo tan quemado, y aumenté las sombras para ganar detalle en el cuerpo del ciclista.

III Raid Sierra de Segura. Jaén. Spain.

I was covering an adventure race and it had been raining all day, but I had enough nice shots and I decided I could be a bit creative. I searched for a fast and easy to ride downhill, and tried to find a non distracting background. I then set a very slow speed on my camera and waited for the teams to come. When they arrive, everything happens in a couple seconds, so there's always a component of luck in the composition. I loved this shot because in spite of the blur, it reflects the concentration of the rider, and also because it leaves a lot of room to interpret how long the race is going to be.
In postprocess, I reduced the highlights to minimize the burnt sky, and increased the shadows to bring more detail into the rider's body.

CURSO BÁSICO DE FLUJO DE TRABAJO CON LIGHTROOM

Hola a todos:

Justo cuando se cumple un año desde mi última publicación, retomo mi sempiterno proyecto de manteneros al día de mi actividad fotográfica. En esta ocasión, simplemente para informar de un minicurso de 8 horas que daremos en Castillo de Bayuela, Toledo, el 12 de Noviembre. Una oportunidad excelente para ponerse las pilas con ese montón de fotos que se van acumulando en nuestro disco duro, y de paso disfrutar de un precioso fin de semana de otoño en la sierra de San Vicente.
